My Rating: 8 out of 10

The Brita large 18 cup ultramax water dispenser and filter is an excellent way to encourage yourself and your family to drink healthy and safe purified water while saving the environment from the waste of plastic bottles that end up in landfills each year. While I do love the many features about it and do use it myself on a daily basis, there are some things about it that I wish Brita made differently in the model.

Setup:

Setting up your Brita Ultramax for the first time is fairly simple. Just wash all the parts in warm sudsy water and rinse very well. The instructions tell you to run the filter (one provided with unit to get you started) in cold water, but I like to soak mine in a cup of water for a few minutes. Then remove it and run under cold water. This is important as you need to remove the charcoal dust from the filter before use.

Then you just insert the reservoir into the unit and pop in the filter. Replace the lid on to the unit and fill with water. It has a smaller refill lid built into the top lid, so I find the easiest way to fill it is to place the entire unit in your sink and fill by moving your kitchen faucet over to the little trap door.

Where you choose to put your unit is up to you, but I prefer to keep it in my fridge so that my filtered water is always cold.

Large Capacity:

I have had Brita pitchers in the past and I have to say that they didn’t keep up with my demand for filtered water. I not only drink regular water, but I also use it to refill my Sodastream bottles, to use in my Keurig machine, in my energy drinks and to fill my pets water bowl.

So that is why I decided to upgrade to the larger capacity of the Ultramax. It holds 18 cups (1.13 gallons) of water which I find to be more than adequate for me. Having adequate amounts of filtered water is important to me and I find that having to fill it less often than the pitchers encourages me to use it more.

A word on built-in fridge water filters:

Yes, I do have an in-door ice and water dispenser built into my fridge. But how often do you change the filter? I find that even when I have these, I often forgot to change the filter. Plus the flow of the water to fill a cup is always so slow in these. My Brita dispenser is almost much quicker in filling water into my glass, my coffee pot, a bottle, etc. Also, most fridge filters are quite costly whereas the Brita filters will only run you about $5 to $6 each.

The Brita filters are also designed to remove much more than most fridge filters are designed to eliminate. So I know I am getting better quality water by removing as much harmful contaminants as possible.

Efficient Use of Space:

I would suggest that you measure your fridge shelf of where you plan to put the Brita in your fridge (or on the counter if you plan to leave it out there). While it is very space efficient, I have found that it does take up a good part of a shelf in some fridges (especially side-by-side models).

When you compare the space that it takes up though, it is actually much less than if you tried to fit 18 cups worth of bottled waters in your fridge or on your counter. So overall, it is a more efficient use of space.

Durability:

This is the one area that I wish Brita would have improved the quality of the product. The plastic is a somewhat brittle plastic and I can tell you from personal experience that you don’t ever want to drop it as it will break into pieces. Also, I find the spout on it seems somewhat cheaply made, although I have never had any issues with this breaking or dripping.

Filter Change Reminder:

There is a plastic cling included with the unit that you apply to the side of it. You then change the month and year on the guide so that you can always have a visual reminder of when you next need to change your filter. It is suggested that you change the filter every 40 gallons of every 2 months. I don’t count how many times I fill the unit so I just go by the 2-month rule and this works fine for me.

The filters are not all that expensive or difficult to find. I usually buy a three-pack so they only run you about $5 each, which is quite affordable.

Piece of Mind:

One of the great things about having your own filtered water in house is that you never have to question what you are drinking. How often have you wondered if the bottled water you are drinking is really in fact good for you? Or if you have a glass of water with your meal at a restaurant, to you ever think about the source of their water?

Once you become aware of the many concerns of drinking just plain tap water you really will find a greater piece of mind knowing that you are doing everything you possibly can to rid your water of harmful contaminants.

Environmentally Conscience:

As much as we would like to believe that we as a society are better about recycling, it is estimated that less than 1% of plastic water bottles actually get recycled. So over 99% of them end up in landfills!

By eliminating bottled waters from your home, you are not only helping the environment, you are also ensuring that you and your family are not consuming all the harmful contaminants of bottled water.

My Overall Advice:

I really do love the Brita Large 18 Cup UltraMax Water Dispenser and Filter. It gives me comfort in knowing that I am consuming healthy filtered water while being large enough to fulfill my everyday needs. The only reasons I am giving it an 8 out of 10 rating are related to the quality of it’s shell. I wish it would be a more durable material, but it has not really failed me yet. For the price, I believe it is a very good deal.
