My Rating: 9 out of 10
There are various Sodastream machines but this one is there base one that I would recommend. It is simple to use and this particular one features the company’s snap locking technology so the bottle “clips” into place. It is very slim and fits on most cupboards. I do recommend you check your cupboard height though to make sure it fits somewhere on your counter. This kit includes a sparkling water machine, a mini size CO2 carbonation that makes up to 9 liters of sparkling water and one BPA-free carbonating bottle. It also includes a 60 liter CO2 carbonator mail-in rebate.
Ease of Use
Making sparkling water at home may sound like a complicated process, but it really is extremely simple. You simply remove the cover of the unit, screw in the carbonator tank that is included with this starter kit and replace it back on to its base. Once you have filled the water bottle included with water, you clip it on to the unit and press down several times until you hear that the carbonation of the bottle has been completed. Unclimbed the bottle from the unit and recap the bottle. It is really just that simple.
Plain Water only!
As the instructions will tell you, the SodaStream is to be used with plain water only. This means distilled water, spring water and purified water are all fine to use with it, but it is not recommended to use with any other liquids. If you wish to add flavoring of any type, you should do so AFTER you carbonate your water.
I never fill my bottles completely and allow at least one to two inches of air at the top of the bottle as you need to allow a bit of space for the carbonation to occur. It also is important if you plan to add flavorings to the bottle as depending on the flavorings you use, this can cause it to fizz.
CO2 carbonators and refilling
Think of your CO2 carbonators the same as if it is a miniature version of a propane gas tank. Every so often you need to get a replacement one. If you are interested in purchasing the SodaStream, you will want to buy a larger tank as the one supplied with it will not carbonate very much water for you. I wish SodaStream would just include a full size CO2 carbonator with this model, but I don’t think they are doing that any longer. It may have something to do with shipping them together with the machine itself but I am not sure. This lack of providing a full size starter tank in this kit is really my only reason for giving it a 9 out of 10 rating.
Anywhere that sells SodaStreams must also carry the CO2 tanks. So no matter where you buy a SodaStream, you can go to anywhere that carries them for sale such as Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc. Just go to there customer service counter and ask them to purchase one. Or you can purchase your first one online when you purchase your SodaStream. Just be sure to add a full size tank to your order when you place your machine order. Otherwise you will be disappointed to discover that the one you received with the machine does not carbonate very much water.
The first time you buy one you pay full price for a tank, which is generally between $30 to $35 depending on where you buy it. But after that, you simply bring the empty canister in to any of the sources I mentioned above and ask for a replacement one. They will take your old one from you and the new one will only run you about half of the cost of buying a new one for the first time. These tanks fill roughly 60 1-liter bottles, so they really do last a very long time.
Expensive? Not really!
You may at first think that the SodaStream machine and accessories are expensive. But when you stop to think about how much money you spend on soda in a week, month or year, you really do save quite a bit of money. Once you have your machine and bottles along with initial full size tank, you really only have the cost of swapping out the tank every so often. I drink at least two liters of sparkling SodaStream every day and I know my tank typically lasts me well over a month. So for instance even if you drink a LOT of water like I do, that is just $15 per month. If I were to buy 30 liter bottles of soda per month that would cost a lot more than $15!
One of the reason I love my Soda Stream is that I feel environmentally concious using it as well. There is no cans or bottles to throw away. The bottles are reusable so you never throw them out. The canisters for the CO2 are refillable so you just bring your used on in to a store for them to swap you so even the canisters never end up in a junk pile.
Clean up is a breeze
As the SodaStream relies on the cap fitting accurately on to the machine, you should never put your bottle(s) in the dishwasher. I can personally attest to the importance of this as a roommate ran mine through the dishwasher once and the fittings were just never the same.
Simply was them with plain soap and water by hand. But be sure you rinse them well as carbonating a bottle with any soap residue in it isn’t the best idea as you will have a soap bubbles bottle if you do.
One thing I love about SodaStream is that you carbonate your bottle, add whatever flavoring you want to it and take it with you….to the office, to the gym, even to a social event. You never have to worry about not having a substitue with you instead of unhealthy soda.
My Personal Use of my SodaStream
I have been using my SodaStream for several years now. It really does provide me with the satisfaction of a bubbly drink so it made it much easier for me to give up soda. Since I am very concerned about contaminents in my water, I have a Brita water filtration shelf system and simplfy fill my bottles from it. Then I place the bottles in the fridge so that they are chilled and ready to be carbonated and flavored whenever I choose. If you aren’t concerned about your tap water containing contaminants, you can certainly fill right from your tap as well.
You may also want to order an assortment flavor pack to see what works best for you.
I personally like to use Mio beverage flavor drops in mine. After carbonating my bottle, I add a few squirts of Mio to my bottle for a healthy drink and I have the satisfaction of knowing that I am consuming more than adequate amounts of water throughout the day. But you can really use a lot of my other suggestions for healthy water alternatives on this site as well. Play around with what you prefer yourself and I am sure you will find that sparkling your water will ensure that you will never drink soda again.
