Top 8 Detox Drinks for Weight Loss
If you are anything like me, you are constantly up and down in your battle with keeping weight off. Cleaning your body of unnatural toxins is just one way to not only help you to kick start a diet, but to also continue with your weight loss strategies and maintain that weight loss as well. Choosing which detox drinks for weight loss is not all that difficult once you understand what each combination does for your body and which taste best to you. This list of the top 8 detox drinks for weight loss will get you started down a path of not only losing and maintaining healthy weight, you will find that you enjoy them as well.
First, don’t choose detox drinks that you don’t like. Your weight loss goals and healthy weight maintenance will not be successful if you try to trick your mind into thinking that something tastes good. You just will not have much success with this if you try a detox water combination that doesn’t taste good to you, so choose which ones you enjoy and stick with those.
Secondly, think of detox fluids much in the same way you think of removing your makeup at night or taking a daily shower. You do these steps as a part of your routine to remove the makeup, dirt and grime from your skin every day as you know it is good hygiene for the outside of your body. Detox fluids work much the same way from the inside of your body. You need to remove the toxins from the inside of your body as well.
How Does Detox Water Help with Weight Loss?
There are many options for creating detox water and the answer to this question really depends on which one you choose as they all have different benefits depending on what you use to infuse your water. Almost every ingredient you use in detox water has a purpose. Personally, I wouldn’t worry so much about which ones you use as long as you are drinking recipes that you enjoy. If you like the taste, you will drink more of it and have increased benefits by doing so.
Probably the most common detox water is cucumber lemon with a twist of mint. You may have had something similar in a spa. Cucumber is a great anti inflamitory and does wonders for keeping your body hydrated. The lemon boosts your immune system and has the added benefit of removing harmful toxins from your body. Mint is often used in detox water for added flavor and sweetness, but it also aids your body with digestion.
How Do I Make Detox Water?
There is not right or wrong way to make detox water. You can use any glass pitcher of jar, stainless steel vessel or even plastic pitcher. Although if you do use plastic, try to get a pitcher or bottle that is BPA-free so that you are not contaminating your water.
You can use any type of water, but I prefer to use purified water as tap water can contain contaminants. The last thing you want to do in making your own DIY detox water is to introduce more contaminants to it than what you are trying to get rid of from your body. I like to use a water filtration system such as my Brita water system to remove harmful tap water contaminants.
It really is as simple as slicing fruits, vegetables, herbs and placing them in your water to infuse it. Some infusions happen quickly depending upon their density. In general though, it is best to leave them in your water overnight in the fridge for the full flavor and health benefits. If you drink the water within the first day, it is safe to leave them soak in your water. But if you are going to save the water beyond a day, you should remove the fruits, vegetables and herbs after a day to save the water for up to three days before using it.
Just follow these simple steps to make detox water:
- Place slices of ingredients in bottom of pitcher or vessel
- Cover with roughly an inch of ice
- Fill rest of vessel with water
- Place in fridge for at least an hour
- You may refill as often as 2 to 3 times before it begins to lose flavor
- Discard ingredients within 24 hours as they will become rancid after that time.
Can I Use Sparkling or Mineral Water for my Detox Water?
Absolutely! I honestly prefer the sparkling water over plain water as the extra bubbles make it more appealing to me and is a great alternative to unhealthy soda products and weight-inducing diet sodas. A word of caution though: The carbonation in sparkling water can accelerate the infusion process time for some fruits, vegetables and herbs. So if you choose to infuse water that has already been carbonated, you may not need to infuse it quite as long. For example, strawberries tend to break down quicker in sparkling water than plain tap or filtered water.
I believe in filtering my water and then sparkling it with my Soda Stream carbonater before adding my fruits, veggies and herbs. It makes a fantastic bubbly beverage with natural health benefits that tastes great as well. But while traveling, I have also just purchased sparkling water in bottles and made my own detox water by adding a sliced cucumber, sliced lemon and mint leaves.
