Why is Diet Soda Bad for Weight Loss? The Truth Uncovered
We’ve all seen and heard the many ads that promise us a beach-ready body if we drink diet soda. The actors and models in these ads are all ripped and so healthy in appearance, that we are led to believe that weight loss through drinking diet soda is the answer to achieve the same results. What they don’t want you to know is just how misleading this promise really is and what it is doing to your diet success and body’s health.
How often have you seen a diet soda commercial featuring a prominent respected and sexy actor or actress encouraging us to drink diet soda? Do you really think these actors and actresses actually look as good as they do guzzling diet sodas? They are paid millions to make these ads, so of course they will tout these diet sodas for the right price, but chances are they don’t even touch the product in their personal lives.
So just why is diet soda bad for weight loss and your overall health? There are numerous reasons which you need to know.
Metabolic Syndrome: Diet Soda Linked to Increased Weight
Studies have shown that drinking diet soda can actually cause a condition known as metabolic syndrome. What this mean in lay men’s terms is that you actually have a higher propensity to higher cholesterol and increased fat when you drink diet soda. The chemicals found in diet sodas actually make you less healthy and can cause your body to retain fat while also increasing your chance of heart disease.
It should be noted that this doesn’t just apply to those who guzzle an exorbitant amount of diet soda. It is actually based on drinking even just ONE CAN of diet soda a day. So imagine what it is doing to those of us who may be drinking it in large quantities.
Obesity increases the more diet soda you drink!
Yes, you read that correctly. Studies have show that those who drink two or more cans of diet soda a day actually are 500% more likely to be obese!! Shocking, but true! Let me say that another way….you are five times more likely to be obese if you drink two cans or more of diet soda a day!
The reason is that diet sodas contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame that trick our minds into thinking that we consumed sugar. Whenever we get that “sugar rush” our body craves more sugar as well as fatty foods. So people who guzzle diet soda regularly are actually much more prone to over eating.
The “Innocent” Addiction: Why it Makes us Crave More
Have you ever drank a diet soda before noon and by lunchtime were craving a drive thru run at a local popular chain restaurant? What did you order? Perhaps a burger or other sandwich? Did you stop there or did you add on the “meal” option? Did you order the regular size or did you order it “super sized”? And what drink did you order with it? The super sized extra large diet soda?
Think about that for a minute. What gave you the cravings to go off your diet at lunchtime and go to a drive thru in the first place? It was likely the morning diet soda chemicals that tricked your mind into craving the fast food in the first place. And what did you just do by ordering the super sized diet drink with it? You actually just fed your body more of the same addiction that started with the first diet soda of the day. But not only a regular drink, a super sized drink which is basically three more diet sodas and you haven’t even made it through half of your day yet!
Trust me, I am not innocent in this one. I have “been there, done that” many times myself. So to answer the original question of “Why is diet soda bad for weight loss?”: Because it not only tricked us into eating unhealthy foods that are definitely not part of a healthy diet, it also has been very sneaky in becoming an addiction without us even knowing it.
Worse hangovers = Diet Sabotage
Our minds play tricks on us all the time, including whenever we decide to enjoy alcohol. Many assume that using diet soda as a mixer with alcohol somehow cancels out the calories in the alcohol itself. While this itself obviously is not true, mixing diet soda with alcohol causes even more problems in the morning!
The carbonation in diet sodas actually makes the alcohol absorb into our body cells quicker which causes and even bigger drunk state. So mixing alcohol with diet sodas also gives us a bigger hangover.
Think about the last time you had a bad hangover. Did you reach for an apple and then head out to the gym or for a run? Probably not. You most likely decided to be sedentary for the day perhaps vegging on the couch and if anything like most of us you probably took a day off from your diet opting for greasy foods, fast food, sweets or whatever you could get your hands on to make yourself feel better.
Dehydration: Blocking our Body’s Natural Abilities
Drinking diet sodas causes out bodies to become dehydrated. Yes, it is a fluid. But like other diuretics, it has the opposite effect of drinking water to “flush” our body as it should.
If you are on any type of diet program or are just on your own diet program, you know that you should drink plenty of water to allow your body the ability to flush fat cells that you have so earnestly been doing every thing to lose. If you are drinking diet sodas as a means to aid your diet, you are actually blocking your body’s natural ability to flush out those fat cells that you are working so hard to rid your body of each day.
Diet Sodas are Anything but Diet Friendly
First, not all diet sodas are created equal. So know what ingredients are in your favorite diet soda before you consume it, as some are much worse for your health than others.
