Kicking Soda Habit — Helpful Tips to Break the Addiction

Our addiction to sodaWe’ve all heard the many reports on just why both regular and diet sodas are so bad for us. Regular soda is filled with sugars and chemicals and there are many reasons why diet soda is bad for us. Yet so many are still hooked on these drinks as satisfaction for their daily thirst fulfillment.

So just why is it so difficult for many of us in kicking soda habit once and for all? It’s because there are so many addictive chemicals and caffeine in them that it is quite understandable why we can easily become so hooked on them.

While it may seem like a daunting task to overcome this addiction, I’m here to tell you it is not. I too have once been addicted to soda and especially diet soda. It really is possible to move beyond and to get your health on the right track if you follow a few tips for replacing sodas with more healthy alternatives.

Water: Nothing Quenches Your Thirst Better

The average regular soda drinker probably finds nothing more boring than water. But the truth is, there are are so many reasons why drinking water is important for our bodies to operate Water Healthy Alternativeefficiently. Consuming a minimum of eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day really is quite simple once you understand just how many ways you can accomplish this goal.

With all of many ways to make water taste more palatable consuming water really does not have to seem like an insurmountable task. It is, after all, what mother nature intends us to drink for assured continued healthy bodies.

Get Moving

Exercise to kick your addiction to sodaStudies have shown that people who exercise regularly tend to drink less healthy drinks such as sodas. Perhaps this is because our bodies actually crave water more when we sweat more. Or it could be that once we become more active, we become more health conscious as well.

Whatever the case may be, if you exercise more regularly (and bring water with you while you are doing so) you will be less inclined to crave sodas.

Alternative Caffeine Fixes

I would be lying if I told you that I have kicked caffeine out of my life when I quit sodas. I still LOVE my coffee and tea! But even coffee and tea are more healthy than regular or diet soda. The reason is that coffee and tea and more natural than sodas and do not contain the chemicals and preservatives found in sodas.Coffee alternative to soda

A word of caution here though, if you are a coffee and tea drinker like me, you will want to also drink adequate amounts of water throughout the day as these caffeinated beverages are diuretics which means that they will dehydrate you. So don’t just drink coffee and tea all day long without drinking water as well.

Remove the temptation

This may seem like a simple enough idea but how many of us still feel like we “need” to have it around our house just in case we have guests who ask for a soda? Personally, I just do not buy it. Or if I do have some around my house, I put it in an upper cupboard in my kitchen so that it is difficult to reach. If it is always in your fridge, chances are you will still reach for it in a weak moment.

This can of course be more challenging if your other family members in your household are also soda addicts. Why not discuss with your family and tell them you are trying this new approach of having alternative drinks in the house. Suggest to them that if they want a soda while they are away from the house, that is allowable but just not in your house.

Keep Busy

Get moving to stay away from sodaBe aware of when you are most likely to drink the most soda during your usual day. It generally for most people is while they are on the sofa, at your desk, or taking a break. Change up your routine so that you aren’t thinking about those usual soda-craving times of the day. Go for a walk instead of your break or watching TV (your body will appreciate you for this as well).

As I mentioned in a previous paragraph, those who exercise tend to drink less soda overall. This doesn’t mean you need to go to the gym or run 5 miles every time you crave a soda. Just walk around the block, or the corridors of your work place. Or anything else to get your mind off of that soda.

Seek Help

This may seem extreme, but for many kicking a difficult addiction requires outside assistance from a therapist or through hypnosis. If you have an extreme addiction to soda, don’t be embarrassed by it and seek help if needed. The amount of money you will save by not purchasing soda will far outweigh the costs if you go this route.

It Gets Better

Kicking soda habit is not easy, but just take it one day at a time and you will find soda less and less appealing. Take it from me that this is definitely true of soda.Alternatives to soda pop

At one point in my life I was drinking six diet cokes a day. Now that I have “seen the light” and drinking alternative healthy drinks I honestly do not crave sodas. Oh yes, once in a while I will order a soda while out for dinner. But I really do find that I don’t enjoy them anymore and wonder why I even ordered it in the first place.

Thanks for posting this. I kicked the soda habit myself at least 5 or 6 years ago now. It was not easy, but I don’t miss it. Now when I want some bubbles in my life I get one of those sparkling waters with no sodium or sweeteners.

Thanks for the comment Kat. I primarily drink sparkling water myself which I create with my SodaStream at home. By far the best investment I ever made as it keeps me from drinking sodas, increases my daily water intake and I have the pleasure of not spending a fortune on soda any more either.
